HBS'er Plans Bluemercury Expansion Despite Economic Slump
Bethesda, MD native Marla Malcom Beck (MBA '98), the founder and CEO of Bluemercury has found success as an entrepreneur with the support of her friends and mentors in the HBS community. Marla began Bluemercury, a high end specialty beauty retail chain, almost a decade ago and has focused on growing the business to almost 30 stores. Her leadership ability and focus can seen in the fact that she had personally interviewed each of the 300 employees until December, when she scaled back her involvement in hiring because the company has grown so large. Helping her along the path of success has been her mentor and fellow HBS alumni Jonathan Ledecky (MBA ’83). She was recently featured in the Washington Post discussing Bluemercury’s plans for growth and her own experiences and career.
